SUMMARY:The Empathy Dilemma - Online with SPC
DESCRIPTION:Join the Society of Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP-MA) and the Society of Professional Consultants (SPC) for a virtual event on The Empathy Dilemma: How Successful Leaders Balance People\, Performance\, and Personal Boundaries with Maria Ross on Thursday December 5\, 3-4\, PM. \nRegister for this online event will open in the fall. \nAbout the Workshop \nAll across the globe\, organizations are becoming more human-centric. They’ve jettisoned old paradigms of success that center on endless overtime and constant employee sacrifice. They’ve tied success to purpose and workforce morale and helped people balance personal and professional needs as their priorities change. They’ve made shifts that are both necessary and positive. But now\, those striving to be empathetic leaders and colleagues are experiencing the dark side: Taking on extra work\, avoiding conflict\, spending too much time on personal issues\, or simply burning out from trying to balance concern for colleagues with the needs of the business. How can we remain human-focused and still maintain high performance\, set personal boundaries\, and avoid burning out\, without being treated like villains? \nIn this timely talk by empathy advocate\, TEDx speaker\, podcaster\, and strategist\, Maria Ross\, author of The Empathy Edge and now The Empathy Dilemma\, you’ll discover how empathy benefits your organization’s performance and why your perception of empathy might be false and leading you astray. You’ll also learn about 5 valuable pillars you can shore up to be both an effective AND empathetic leader and find more success. \nTakeaways: \n· DEFINE what empathy at work actually is – and more importantly\, what it is NOT \n· DISCOVER 3 bottom-line organizational benefits of empathetic leadership and culture – through presenting relevant data and research and discussing case studies that disrupt traditional thinking. Empathy is not just good for the world\, but it can be a competitive advantage. We’ll walk through the financial & organizational benefits of leading with empathy. \n· RECOGNIZE why empathy at work is so challenging in a post-pandemic world\, especially for leaders \n· DISCOVER and PRACTICE the Five Pillars of Effective Empathy to avoid burnout and better balance people\, performance\, and personal boundaries.

SUMMARY:Pro Tour: Affordable Passive House Midrise in Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Time:\n1pm-5pm\nLocation:\nBrownsville\nBrooklyn\nNew York City\, NY\nCEU Information:\nAIA (pending) \nCost:\n$25 Members/$35 Non-Members\nJoin NESEA for the final Pro Tour of 2024: a passive house-certified\, 185\,000 square-foot building\, providing 160 units of much-needed affordable housing to the neighborhood of Brownsville\, Brooklyn. \nOur event hosts\, Bright Power\, are excited to share this project with the NESEA community\, as they hope it will serve as a replicable example of how to approach housing disparities and promote sustainability in Central Brooklyn. Our event will begin with an opening workshop where the project team will discuss the history\, goals and design and construction and strategies behind this project. Attendees will then break into small groups to hear more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, we’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A. \nMore About the Project \nThis 7-story\, 160-unit Phius+ 2015 residential project includes two buildings joined by a lobby. The lobby level includes shared spaces including coworking space\, a fitness center\, and community rooms\, in addition to the outdoor spaces\, such as vegetated courtyards\, provided for residents. \nThe building provides its low-income population with verified thermal comfort\, superior air quality\, and deep energy savings through a highly efficient envelope and mechanical systems\, supplemented by on-site generation technology via the 100 kW rooftop photovoltaic array. The building was designed to ensure efficient temperature regulation throughout the year to promote passive resiliency while operating at a low heating and cooling demand. \nThe team prioritized a highly insulated envelope to ensure the VRF heating and cooling systems provide maximum comfort as building air leakage has been nearly eliminated\, combined with ERVs to provide large amounts of fresh air to the apartments and common areas\, with minimal heating or cooling energy loss. \nThis project benefitted from NYSERDA support in pursuit of its goals to incorporate such high efficiency standards into an affordable housing project

SUMMARY:2025 Power Markets Conference
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Thursday\, January 16 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm\nWHERE: Boston University\, Center for Computing & Data Sciences\, 665 Commonwealth Avenue \nA major transformation is underway in our energy system\, driven by state and federal policies seeking to spur renewable development\, electrify the economy\, and slash carbon emissions by mid-century. These policies\, and the rapid changes they have catalyzed\, are putting immense pressure on current power market design. Looking ahead\, can markets be redesigned to achieve reliability and carbon reductions while remaining economical—and what are the tradeoffs and the ways to minimize the impact? Or\, ultimately\, is the impact of this transformation so large that the solution must be something other than market based? Please join us on January 16\, 2025\, for a robust discussion on these questions.

SUMMARY:President Salome Zourabichvili on Georgian democracy and Russian influence
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 21 at 12:00 p.m. ET\, the Atlantic Council hosts an #ACFrontPage conversation featuring President Salome Zourabichvili on the current political landscape in Georgia and the role Russia plays in undermining democratic processes in Europe and beyond. \n2024 was a turbulent year for Georgia. The country’s parliamentary elections in October were marred by serious internationally recognized voting irregularities. With support from Moscow\, Georgian Dream has used this power to crack down on civil society\, free media\, and political opposition. The party has also taken steps to further distance the country from its Euro-Atlantic path\, contrary to the will of the majority of Georgian citizens to join the European Union and NATO. Most recently\, this culminated a decision by Georgian Dream chairman Irakli Kobakhidze (the current occupant of the role of prime minister) to suspend negotiations to join the European Union until 2028. \nIn response\, hundreds of thousands of Georgian citizens took to the streets in Tbilisi and across the country to demonstrate against Georgian Dream’s aggressive attempts at repression and for a Euro-Atlantic future. Zourabichvili played a vital role in backing the pro-democracy protests and is considered by protestors as the rightful president of Georgia until free and fair elections are held. \nZourabichvili\, in conversation with Ia Meurmishvili\, chief international correspondent at the Cipher Brief\, discuss what’s next in Georgia’s fight for democracy. Daniel Fried\, Weiser family distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, joins to provide opening remarks. \nThis edition of #ACFrontPage\, hosted by the Eurasia Center\, will be livestreamed on Atlantic Council TV\, YouTube\, Facebook\, and X. To join us virtually\, please complete the registration form.

SUMMARY:Boundaries: Exploring & Setting Boundaries to Reduce Your Stress & Increase Your Confidence
DESCRIPTION:We often wonder how to improve our “work-life balance”. One reason it’s so hard to answer this\, is that it’s the wrong question. Balance implies equal time or a consistent\, static state. Our lives are far too complex and changeable to be able to find one right answer on how to honor all of our commitments. \nIn this interactive workshop you will have the chance to explore the ways Boundaries show up in your own life. You will walk away with a deeper understanding of how to set limits on your time that are aligned with your values and what matters most to you. You will be able to identify ways to lead your life so that you can meet all the important commitments first—and do so while being free of the guilt and uncertainty when you say “No” to the expectations. \nOne reason setting Boundaries is so hard is that we often worry what would happen if we said “No”. We may worry that we won’t get the promotion if we don’t stay late every night. Or you might have a friend who takes up too much of your time\, but you don’t want to feel like a bad friend if you say “No” to her requests. \nIn this workshop\, you will have the chance to identify the boundaries in your life that are most challenging for you. Is it saying “No”? Is it making time for self-care? Is it letting go of the guilt for arranging a girls’ night out once in a while? Or is it getting creative on finding a way to say “Yes” to projects and goals you’ve been too busy to achieve? \nYou will learn from stories of women who identified what was most important to them\, and trusted those beliefs. When these brave women identified their values around a situation\, their ability to know what the right thing to do became obvious\, and they never looked back.
