SUMMARY:Pro Tour: Under Construction Passive House with Integrated PV Roof
DESCRIPTION:Event Date:\nFriday\, June 6\, 2025\nTime:\n1pm-5pm\nLocation:\nBethany\, CT 06524\nCEU Information:\nAIA (pending)\, Phius (pending) \nCost:\n$35 Members/$45 Non-Members\nOn June 6\, NESEA will be organizing a tour of a new single family home\, still under construction and being built to Passive House standards. \nAttendees at this early summer event will learn the story of this project\, nestled away in Bethany\, CT. The event hosts hope to showcase this residence\, which will be net zero ready\, as an example of a high-performance residence with minimal environmental impact. \nThe event will begin with an opening presentation\, with details including the design strategies\, materials selection\, performance goals\, and site considerations of the project. Attendees will then break into small groups to tour the facility while hearing more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, we’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to chat with the day’s speakers and each other. \nAbout the Project \nWith a brook on the property\, the sensitive hydrology demanded a rigorous storm-water management approach\, incorporating rain chains and on-site infiltration wells to mitigate runoff and reduce reliance on municipal systems. The project team used an airtight envelope\, high-performance insulation\, thermal bridge-free detailing to improve the home’s performance\, and strategically positioned the triple-pane windows to optimize solar gain and heat retention. \nA state-of-the-art metal roof integrated with photovoltaic panels (one of the first installations of its kind in the nation) will offset 100% of demand\, including battery storage and electric vehicle charging. Sustainability extends to material selection\, with naturally weather-resistant cedar siding finished in a traditional charring process for durability without chemical treatments. Currently under construction and pre-certified under Phius +18\, the project team offers to share this residence as an example of what they hope can be an evolving model of resilience\, energy independence\, and environmental stewardship—setting a new benchmark for sustainable homebuilding.

SUMMARY:Benefit-Cost Analysis of Distributed Energy Resource Investments
DESCRIPTION:Join a training course for evaluation practitioners on the purpose\, process and key considerations in benefit-cost analysis (BCA) — also referred to as “cost-effectiveness testing” — of single and multiple distributed energy resource (DER) investments. DERs can include energy efficiency\, demand response\, distributed storage and solar\, and building and transportation electrification. Attendees will delve into practical application of key concepts in BCA using the National Standard Practice Manual for Benefit-Cost Analysis of Distributed Energy Resources (NSPM). \nThis training will consist of three modules\, each two hours\, starting with a review of key economic principles and framework for conducting BCAs\, how to develop a primary cost-effectiveness test and approaches to quantifying DER impacts\, options for presenting BCA results that are clear and help to inform a jurisdiction’s priority goals and objectives\, and differentiating between BCA and other analyses that help to inform DER investment decisions. \nDay One: BCA Principles and Framework \nBrief overview – purpose of BCAs\nBCA principles and framework\nFundamental principles for benefit-cost analysis\nCost-effectiveness testing and perspectives\nBCA in different regulatory contexts\nOverview of key BCA components: utility system impacts (electric and gas); non-utility system impacts (other fuels\, host customer\, and societal)\nKey steps to developing a jurisdiction’s primary cost-effectiveness test\nDay Two: Developing a Primary Cost-Effectiveness Test and Quantifying Impacts \nDeveloping a primary cost-effectiveness test (continued): how to identify relevant DER impacts; applying key BCA principles to inform the primary test\nQuantifying BCA impacts: key steps to quantifying impact values – overview; methods for quantifying impacts\, including hard-to-quantify impacts; resources to help quantify impacts\nBCA Testing across different DERs: relevance of impacts for some types of DERs/use cases and examples\nDay Three: Presenting BCA Results (And Other Analyses) that Can Inform Decisions \nPresenting BCA results: Examples of how to present BCA results and interpreting/using results\nBCA v. other analyses that can inform DER investment decisions: examples include rate\, bill and participation impact analyses; economic development and job analyses; and analysis of the distribution of DER impacts across different customer groups.

SUMMARY:Northeast Sustainable Energy Association: Pro Tour - Transforming & Expanding an Existing Building on the Dartmouth College Campus
DESCRIPTION:Join NESEA for a Pro Tour of a high performance\, 55\,000 square foot building on the Dartmouth College campus that combined a major addition with targeted renovation to house the newly created Irving Institute for Energy and Society. \nCompleted in 2022\, this building fulfilled the client’s vision to marry aspirational architecture with energy efficiency and sustainable design elements for a building that is best-in-class for its time. Having started as a 1970s building\, which was renovated and expanded\, the final project demonstrates methods for decarbonize existing structures while piloting integrated systems rarely seen in Climate Zone 6\, including automated natural ventilation\, radiant floor and ceilings\, automated shading systems\, and daylight features. \nThe event hosts\, van Zelm Engineers\, will be leading the event and are eager to share their work with the NESEA community. The tour will begin with an opening workshop where the team will discuss the history\, goals\, and design and construction strategies. You’ll also learn about the actual vs modeled building performance with data from its earliest stages of occupancy to date. Attendees will then break into small groups to tour the facility while hearing more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, you’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to chat with the day’s speakers and each other. \nMore About the Building:\nThe high-performing envelope drives down heating and cooling loads\, allowing the building to operate with ultra-efficient radiant ceilings throughout workspaces and a radiant slab in the large atrium space. The building’s innovative\, architecturally integrated cooling and ventilation strategies will help it meet future needs\, with 83% of occupied spaces being served by the automated natural ventilation system. The centerpiece of this system—a double-skin glass portico at the main entrance—echoes the campus’s traditional architecture while enhancing ventilation performance. Physically weaving together old and new structures resulted in embodied carbon savings (through material reductions) and operational carbon savings (through system upgrades) to support campuswide decarbonization goals. Other architectural components that support the natural ventilation system include the rooftop thermal vent to drive natural ventilation system\, full-height dampers architecturally integrated in atrium wall\, and automated awning and parallel project windows. \nThe team also worked to identify and eliminate harmful substances and avoiding Red List materials. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and bio-based materials were also favored wherever possible\, contributing to lower carbon emissions\, improved air quality\, enhanced thermal comfort\, and support for biophilic design principles. \nCertifications:\nLEED Platinum Certification \nAwards: \n\nUSGBC New Hampshire Building of the Year\nMarket Leader Award for Energy and Water Efficiency\, USGBC Massachusetts\nExcellence in Architecture Merit Award\, AIA New Hampshire\n\n\n\n\n\nCEU Information:\n\n\nAIA (pending) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n$35 Members/$45 Non-Members
