SUMMARY:Alliance for Climate Transition: An Introduction to Apprenticeship in the Clean Energy Sector
DESCRIPTION:This foundational session offers an in-depth overview of apprenticeships and their role in addressing workforce gaps in the clean energy sector. Participants will learn how registered apprenticeships function\, why they matter in a rapidly evolving energy economy\, and how they can serve as a tool for advancing equity and job quality. Speakers will break down apprenticeship components\, the registration process\, and examples of clean energy occupations suitable for apprenticeship models. This is ideal for employers\, workforce boards\, educators\, and community organizations new to apprenticeships or exploring their potential. \nSpeakers \nCharlie Cornish\, Co-Founder\, American Apprenticeships Work \nCharlie Cornish is the Co-Founder of American Apprenticeships Work\, a national leader in building scalable\, employer-driven apprenticeship programs for modern industries. He’s partnered with organizations like NECA and Miller Electric to design and launch training models that develop talent based on potential rather than credentials. Charlie helped lead the launch of the first-ever USDOL-registered\, office-based apprenticeship for project managers in the electrical industry—now used by NECA employers across the country. With over 15 years of experience in workforce innovation\, he builds programs that align real employer needs with accessible\, high-quality training. His work makes apprenticeships easy for employers to adopt—and\, in doing so\, creates meaningful career pathways and upward mobility for individuals often overlooked by traditional systems. \nEthan Kenvarg\, Founder & Principal\, Neshe Consulting \nEthan Kenvarg is the Founder & Principal Consultant of Neshe Consulting\, a boutique agency specializing in all thing’s apprenticeship. Ethan is an accomplished strategic leader in the workforce & education sectors. SUMMARY:Northeast Sustainable Energy Association: Pro Tour - Transforming & Expanding an Existing Building on the Dartmouth College Campus
DESCRIPTION:Join NESEA for a Pro Tour of a high performance\, 55\,000 square foot building on the Dartmouth College campus that combined a major addition with targeted renovation to house the newly created Irving Institute for Energy and Society. \nCompleted in 2022\, this building fulfilled the client’s vision to marry aspirational architecture with energy efficiency and sustainable design elements for a building that is best-in-class for its time. Having started as a 1970s building\, which was renovated and expanded\, the final project demonstrates methods for decarbonize existing structures while piloting integrated systems rarely seen in Climate Zone 6\, including automated natural ventilation\, radiant floor and ceilings\, automated shading systems\, and daylight features. \nThe event hosts\, van Zelm Engineers\, will be leading the event and are eager to share their work with the NESEA community. The tour will begin with an opening workshop where the team will discuss the history\, goals\, and design and construction strategies. You’ll also learn about the actual vs modeled building performance with data from its earliest stages of occupancy to date. Attendees will then break into small groups to tour the facility while hearing more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, you’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to chat with the day’s speakers and each other. \nMore About the Building:\nThe high-performing envelope drives down heating and cooling loads\, allowing the building to operate with ultra-efficient radiant ceilings throughout workspaces and a radiant slab in the large atrium space. The building’s innovative\, architecturally integrated cooling and ventilation strategies will help it meet future needs\, with 83% of occupied spaces being served by the automated natural ventilation system. The centerpiece of this system—a double-skin glass portico at the main entrance—echoes the campus’s traditional architecture while enhancing ventilation performance. Physically weaving together old and new structures resulted in embodied carbon savings (through material reductions) and operational carbon savings (through system upgrades) to support campuswide decarbonization goals. Other architectural components that support the natural ventilation system include the rooftop thermal vent to drive natural ventilation system\, full-height dampers architecturally integrated in atrium wall\, and automated awning and parallel project windows. \nThe team also worked to identify and eliminate harmful substances and avoiding Red List materials. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and bio-based materials were also favored wherever possible\, contributing to lower carbon emissions\, improved air quality\, enhanced thermal comfort\, and support for biophilic design principles. \nCertifications:\nLEED Platinum Certification \nAwards: \n\nUSGBC New Hampshire Building of the Year\nMarket Leader Award for Energy and Water Efficiency\, USGBC Massachusetts\nExcellence in Architecture Merit Award\, AIA New Hampshire\n\n\n\n\n\nCEU Information:\n\n\nAIA (pending) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n$35 Members/$45 Non-Members

DESCRIPTION:This August\, NESEA will head to Connecticut to offer a tour of a renovated and expanded 1940s elementary school that has been transformed into a modern\, net-zero facility\, complete with a 66 well geothermal HVAC system\, to serve 400 students. \nOriginally built in 1949\, this project highlights the practical implementation of cutting-edge sustainable design principles in a real-world setting\, while also showing the challenges and opportunities of transforming outdated school infrastructure into modern\, net zero energy facilities. From its geothermal HVAC system and rooftop solar array to its interdisciplinary STEAM spaces and improved circulation design\, the project offers a comprehensive look at innovative solutions that align with both environmental and educational goals. \nThe event will begin with an opening workshop where the team will discuss the history\, goals\, and design and construction strategies. Attendees will then break into small groups to tour the school while hearing more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, you’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to chat with the day’s speakers and each other.
