SUMMARY:Pro Tour Of Net Zero Energy Retrofit And Expansion Of A 1782 Vermont Farmhouse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Summer Pro Tour of an under construction\, zero-energy retrofit of a 1782 Vermont Farmhouse\, plus a high performance addition\, in beautiful Reading\, Vermont. Attendees of this tour will learn about the process of retrofitting a historic building\, and the strategies employed for the addition (built off-site)\, to create a net zero energy building with reduced embodied carbon. \nOur event will begin with an opening presentation from the hosting team\, which will give attendees background on the original structure\, the design and build of the addition\, and the overall approach to meeting client sustainability goals. After the opening presentation\, we’ll split into groups to hear from the professionals behind the project\, who will share their specific work. After the tour\, we’ll host a reception and Q&A with the team. \nThis 4181 sq. ft. square-foot building features updated hydronics\, appliances\, an air-water heat pump\, EV charging\, whose energy use is balanced via on-site photovoltaic electrical generation. Heating\, cooling\, and domestic hot water will be supplied by a single air to water heat pump. The choice of hydronics\, combined with the dramatic increase in thermal performance of the original structure\, allows for the reuse of radiators in the original house. The projected annual electrical load is met by the on-site\, grid-tied\, ground-mounted PV system. The building was designed to blend into its rural setting\, connect the living spaces to the surrounding landscape\, and serve the diverse programming needs of the clients: aging in place\, family gatherings\, and hosting groups ranging from 10-40+ people for community-building events and smaller retreat experiences. \nIn order to make the retrofit possible\, significant repairs were performed to make the building structurally sound and also square\, level\, and plumb from the exterior. Materials were carefully selected to reduce the embodied carbon of the new construction\, including 6-inch concrete stem walls\, slag concrete\, and a slabless floor system. Using cellulose insulation allowed the builders to take advantage of its thermal\, hygroscopic\, and carbon-sequestering properties. By being careful during the deconstruction of the house and attached breezeway\, a lot of the existing historic interior was repurposed\, including original interior doors\, large hand-hewn beams\, barn board\, framing\, and flooring. \nIf you are interested in projects that emphasize reusing materials\, ways to reduce concrete\, retrofitting very old structures\, complex multidisciplinary residential projects\, and blending on and off-site construction\, then this is the Pro Tour for you. SUMMARY:2024 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings is the 23rd biennial event. Summer Study will bring together professionals from around the globe to the Asilomar Conference Grounds to collaborate\, debate and advance the technologies\, practices and research necessary to equitably decarbonize the building sector in a manner that addresses the urgency of the climate crisis. \nThe 2024 theme is Equity and Climate Action: Time to Deliver. In August 2022\, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, an unprecedented investment to transform our built environment and electricity sector to be safer and healthier\, reducing carbon emissions and prioritizing the needs of underserved communities. At the same time\, climate crisis is now a reality and is becoming more urgent and critical by the day. The Rhodium Group estimates that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the US increased by 1.3% in 2022. While emissions from the electric power sector decreased in 2022\, outside of the power sector\, emissions increased slightly. The most significant increase was seen in direct emissions from buildings\, which rose by 6% and was the only sector to rebound to pre-pandemic levels. This is our opportunity to right the ship\, take advantage of this critical moment in history and identify the innovations that will deliver climate justice through deep emissions reductions in our buildings.

SUMMARY:Male Allies in the Energy Sector
DESCRIPTION:The energy sector has traditionally been male-dominated. In both developed and developing countries\, women are still outnumbered in technical\, and supervisory positions in utilities and other energy sector agencies. Women attempting to enter the energy sector continue to face barriers such as gender stereotypes and bias\, and a lack of training\, mentorship and networking. A lack of diversity can have harmful impacts. When only one group dominates planning and decision-making\, there is less innovation\, productivity\, and sustainability. There are\, however\, men in the energy sector who see equity and inclusion as not just a nice-to-have but a ‘must have\,’ and who champion improvements to workplace policies\, practices\, and culture to elevate women and eliminate negative gender stereotypes and behaviors. \nThe objective of this panel discussion is to highlight male champions for gender equality through their work in the energy sector across multiple countries worldwide. Panelists will share their personal experiences\, how they have tried to promote gender equality in their organizations and projects\, how this has led to better business outcomes\, any challenges they have encountered\, and their general advice. In late 2022\, CWEEL held a virtual discussion highlighting 4 male allies in the energy sector. This panel will feature another set of male allies representing various countries and energy organizations. \nClick here to register: https://aeecenter-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4P3pZG0CQSSTTC2PI-SPZQ

SUMMARY:EBC Report-Out on the Recommendations of the Massachusetts Commission on Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting
DESCRIPTION:Join EBC for an opportunity to learn more about the recommendations of the Massachusetts Commission on Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting issued on March 29\, 2024. The Commission\, made up of a diverse membership of professionals and advocates invested in the Commonwealth’s clean energy transition goals\, was tasked with providing recommendations that will help reduce permitting timelines\, ensure communities have input in the siting and permitting of clean energy infrastructure\, and ensure that the benefits of a clean energy transition are shared equitably. The recommendations will provide an important resource to policy makers and state leadership in their work to implement the Commonwealth’s net zero goals. \nThis EBC “report-out” brings the Chair of Commission Michael Judge into the room to provide an overview of the Commission\, its processes and work\, as well as a review of the recommendations. Following Chair Judge’s overview\, a panel of Commission members will discuss the recommendations in more detail and answer audience questions. \nThis is a “can’t miss” lunchtime program for anyone interested in the clean energy transition. \nAbout the Commission on Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting \nThe Commission on Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting was established by Executive Order 620 in September 2023 and was tasked with reducing permitting timelines\, ensuring communities have input in the siting and permitting of clean energy infrastructure\, and ensuring that the benefits of the clean energy transition are shared equitably. \nThe Commission provided recommendations to the Governor on administrative\, regulatory\, and legislative changes to existing permitting and siting procedures on April 1\, 2024 [read the recommendations]. \nGeneral Continuing Education Certificates are awarded by the EBC for this program (1.5 training contact hours). Certificates are automatically provided via email link for registered attendees at the conclusion of the program. \nRegister Here: https://web.cvent.com/event/3658736e-4a9b-435d-8138-9e6aa291a91a/register
