SUMMARY:Northeast Sustainable Energy Association: Pro Tour - Transforming & Expanding an Existing Building on the Dartmouth College Campus
DESCRIPTION:Join NESEA for a Pro Tour of a high performance\, 55\,000 square foot building on the Dartmouth College campus that combined a major addition with targeted renovation to house the newly created Irving Institute for Energy and Society. \nCompleted in 2022\, this building fulfilled the client’s vision to marry aspirational architecture with energy efficiency and sustainable design elements for a building that is best-in-class for its time. Having started as a 1970s building\, which was renovated and expanded\, the final project demonstrates methods for decarbonize existing structures while piloting integrated systems rarely seen in Climate Zone 6\, including automated natural ventilation\, radiant floor and ceilings\, automated shading systems\, and daylight features. \nThe event hosts\, van Zelm Engineers\, will be leading the event and are eager to share their work with the NESEA community. The tour will begin with an opening workshop where the team will discuss the history\, goals\, and design and construction strategies. You’ll also learn about the actual vs modeled building performance with data from its earliest stages of occupancy to date. Attendees will then break into small groups to tour the facility while hearing more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, you’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A\, giving attendees the opportunity to chat with the day’s speakers and each other. \nMore About the Building:\nThe high-performing envelope drives down heating and cooling loads\, allowing the building to operate with ultra-efficient radiant ceilings throughout workspaces and a radiant slab in the large atrium space. The building’s innovative\, architecturally integrated cooling and ventilation strategies will help it meet future needs\, with 83% of occupied spaces being served by the automated natural ventilation system. The centerpiece of this system—a double-skin glass portico at the main entrance—echoes the campus’s traditional architecture while enhancing ventilation performance. Physically weaving together old and new structures resulted in embodied carbon savings (through material reductions) and operational carbon savings (through system upgrades) to support campuswide decarbonization goals. Other architectural components that support the natural ventilation system include the rooftop thermal vent to drive natural ventilation system\, full-height dampers architecturally integrated in atrium wall\, and automated awning and parallel project windows. \nThe team also worked to identify and eliminate harmful substances and avoiding Red List materials. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and bio-based materials were also favored wherever possible\, contributing to lower carbon emissions\, improved air quality\, enhanced thermal comfort\, and support for biophilic design principles. \nCertifications:\nLEED Platinum Certification \nAwards: \n\nUSGBC New Hampshire Building of the Year\nMarket Leader Award for Energy and Water Efficiency\, USGBC Massachusetts\nExcellence in Architecture Merit Award\, AIA New Hampshire\n\n\n\n\n\nCEU Information:\n\n\nAIA (pending) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n$35 Members/$45 Non-Members

Kallman is a Democrat representing District 15 (Pawtucket\, Providence) in the Rhode Island Senate. \nShe served two terms on the Pawtucket City Council prior to being elected to the Senate in November 2020. During her time in the General Assembly\, Sen. Kallman has advanced legislation related to housing\, climate action\, transportation and other issues. \nIn 2023\, she sponsored two major new laws to address the state’s housing crisis. One will facilitate the conversion of empty buildings like mills and schools into housing. Another provides funding to support transit-oriented development\, the creation of mixed-use\, mixed-income housing around transit hubs. Given the number of old mill buildings in Pawtucket and Providence and the communities proximity to transit stations\, both cities are well positioned to take advantage of these laws to provide more housing. \nSen. Kallman also sponsored laws in 2023 to make birth control more available by allowing trained pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraceptives and support workers by toughening penalties on wage theft and helped secure funding to keep the R-Line (RIPTA’s busiest bus route) free for all riders. She cosponsored the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act and a bill to expand solar development while protecting forests and rate payers. She was also honored as a 2023 Environmental Champion by Clean Water Action for her work protecting the environment. \nShe was the Senate sponsor of the Fair Housing Practices Act\, which bars housing discrimination against renters based on their source of income\, as well as a provision in the state budget creating Rhode Island’s first-ever permanent revenue stream to support affordable housing. She also sponsored legislation barring housing discrimination based on gender identity or expression. \nShe sponsored an amendment to the Rhode Island Whistle Blowers Protection Act to prohibit employers from reporting or threatening to report an employee’s immigration status for whistle-blowing. She introduced a successful resolution creating a study of how to reduce the number of women incarcerated in Rhode Island and proposed a bill that would make transportation on RIPTA buses free for all Rhode Islanders. \nSen. Kallman received the 2021 Pacesetter Award from the Women Legislators’ Lobby\, or WILL\, a program of Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND). She was among seven Pacesetters\, women state legislators nationwide who are leading the way in redirecting much-needed federal funds back to their constituents. \nSen. Kallman was born on Nov. 18\, 1983. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Smith College and went on to earn a Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago and a Doctorate from Brown University. She is a professor at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston. \nShe previously served on the State Housing Appeals Board\, the Pawtucket Juvenile Hearing Board and as a fellow with the Women’s Police Institute.
