SUMMARY:Clean Energy NH: Rise & Connect: A Women's Networking Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:The energy transition is being shaped by remarkable women across New Hampshire – and this is your space to find them. \n\n\n\nThere is something powerful about being in a room full of women who get it. \nJoin Clean Energy NH on the morning of Wednesday\, May 6 for our inaugural Women’s Networking Breakfast at the Bedford Village Inn in Bedford\, NH – a first-of-its-kind gathering hosted during NH Energy Week. \nFrom 9:00a to 11:00a\, Clean Energy NH is creating an open\, relaxed (lightly facilitated) space for women working across the energy and environment sector in New Hampshire to come together over coffee/tea and a warm breakfast. Join Clean Energy NH for meaningful conversation\, new connections\, and the kind of energy that comes from being in a (comfortable) room where you belong. \nWhether you’re a seasoned leader\, an emerging professional\, or somewhere in between – this morning is for you. Come as you are\, bring a colleague\, and leave with a fuller network and a fuller plate. \nPlease note: This event is designed as a participant-driven ‘open space’ for women to connect\, share experiences\, and shape conversations around what matters most to them. Clean Energy NH is intentionally creating a supportive environment centered on women’s voices and perspectives.

SUMMARY:WNE Chapter Volunteer Build Day with Levo International
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1778088993923{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]NEWIEE’s Western New England (WNE) chapter is excited to partner with Levo International\, a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to empowering people to end poverty through innovative\, simplified hydroponics. \nLast year\, Levo built a site producing 25\,000 pounds of fresh produce annually. This month\, they received another vacant lot in the North End of Hartford\, one of the most food-insecure areas in the United States. This new site will double the impact—producing 50\,000 pounds of fresh food for the community. \nWe’re looking for volunteers to support the build-out of these new hydroponic farms and help turn a vacant lot into a productive community hub. \nVolunteer activities may include: \n\nSanding and staining\nBuilding and assembling hydroponic frames\nLight construction and leveling\nMulching\, potting\, and seeding\n\nWhat to wear/bring: \n\nClothes you don’t mind getting dirty or stained\nClosed-toe shoes\nDress for the weather\nA reusable water bottle\n\n⚠️ Important: All volunteers will be required to sign a waiver as part of registration. \n👉 How to register: \nAfter registering with NEWIEE you will need to create a login on the Levo registration platform in addition. Once logged in\, you’ll be able to view the event under the NEWIEE group and complete your registration. \nJoin us for a hands-on day of service\, impact\, and community. SUMMARY:EBC: Sticker Shock: Why Water & Wastewater Project Costs Rise Over Time – and What to Do About It
DESCRIPTION:Water and wastewater infrastructure across the country is aging rapidly\, with the need for repairs and upgrades far outpacing the pace of implementation. In the 1970’s\, understanding the need for a nationwide investment in infrastructure\, the federal government subsidized the construction of new water and wastewater infrastructure. That infrastructure has now reached its  end-of-useful life and repairs and upgrades are necessary\, but communities face that cost without federal support. Beyond that significant challenge\, communities in New England also continue to struggle with upgrading centuries old wastewater infrastructure like combined sewers that contribute to water quality issues in receiving waters during rainfall events that trigger combined sewer overflows (CSOs).  Add to that increased regulatory demand of stormwater permitting\, stricter pollutant limits on nutrients\, and the great regulatory unknown of emerging contaminants like PFAS and you suddenly have communities and districts facing billions of dollars and a long-term capital crisis. \nWhile funding programs exist\, securing adequate funding remains one of the greatest challenges facing utilities and municipalities today. Compounding this challenge is the fact that funding decisions are often based on early-stage\, conceptual engineering cost estimates. As projects move through design\, costs frequently escalate—sometimes dramatically—due to market conditions\, contractor availability\, evolving project scopes\, regulatory requirements\, and design refinements. These increases strain project budgets and erode confidence between engineers and their clients\, as well as between utilities and the communities they serve. \nThis EBC Water Resources Committee webinar will explore the many infrastructure and regulatory demands facing communities as well as the drivers of cost escalation during the design process\, including inflation and price volatility\, construction market constraints\, design changes\, and scope additions. While price escalation cannot always be avoided\, engineers and project teams can take proactive steps to better anticipate and communicate these changes. \nAttendees will learn strategies for improving cost transparency\, setting realistic expectations\, and strengthening trust throughout the design and funding process\, helping mitigate the impacts of escalating project costs and maintain confidence among all stakeholders. \nGeneral Continuing Education Certificates are awarded by the EBC for this program (2.0 training contact hours). Certificates are automatically provided via email link for registered attendees at the conclusion of the webinar. \nSpeaker Agenda:\nSetting the Stage – “Story of New Bedford” \n\nShawn Syde\, PE\, City Engineer\, New Bedford\n\nPermitting & Community Costs – How Regulations Increase Costs \n\nFredric P. Andes\, Partner\, Barnes & Thornburg\n\nWhat Can We Do About Changes in Project Costs Over Time? \n\nBrian Maksymetz\, P. Eng.\, Collaborative Delivery Portfolio Manager\, Jacobs\n\nModerated Discussion \nProgram Chairs:\n\nAndrea Braga\, PE\, CPESC\, Chair\, EBC Water Resources Committee; Principal Engineer | New England Water Department Leader\, Jacobs\nKorrin Petersen\, Of Counsel\, Bowditch\n\nAdditional information can be found under the tabs above.

Kallman is a Democrat representing District 15 (Pawtucket\, Providence) in the Rhode Island Senate. \nShe served two terms on the Pawtucket City Council prior to being elected to the Senate in November 2020. During her time in the General Assembly\, Sen. Kallman has advanced legislation related to housing\, climate action\, transportation and other issues. \nIn 2023\, she sponsored two major new laws to address the state’s housing crisis. One will facilitate the conversion of empty buildings like mills and schools into housing. Another provides funding to support transit-oriented development\, the creation of mixed-use\, mixed-income housing around transit hubs. Given the number of old mill buildings in Pawtucket and Providence and the communities proximity to transit stations\, both cities are well positioned to take advantage of these laws to provide more housing. \nSen. Kallman also sponsored laws in 2023 to make birth control more available by allowing trained pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraceptives and support workers by toughening penalties on wage theft and helped secure funding to keep the R-Line (RIPTA’s busiest bus route) free for all riders. She cosponsored the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act and a bill to expand solar development while protecting forests and rate payers. She was also honored as a 2023 Environmental Champion by Clean Water Action for her work protecting the environment. \nShe was the Senate sponsor of the Fair Housing Practices Act\, which bars housing discrimination against renters based on their source of income\, as well as a provision in the state budget creating Rhode Island’s first-ever permanent revenue stream to support affordable housing. She also sponsored legislation barring housing discrimination based on gender identity or expression. \nShe sponsored an amendment to the Rhode Island Whistle Blowers Protection Act to prohibit employers from reporting or threatening to report an employee’s immigration status for whistle-blowing. She introduced a successful resolution creating a study of how to reduce the number of women incarcerated in Rhode Island and proposed a bill that would make transportation on RIPTA buses free for all Rhode Islanders. \nSen. Kallman received the 2021 Pacesetter Award from the Women Legislators’ Lobby\, or WILL\, a program of Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND). She was among seven Pacesetters\, women state legislators nationwide who are leading the way in redirecting much-needed federal funds back to their constituents. \nSen. Kallman was born on Nov. 18\, 1983. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Smith College and went on to earn a Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago and a Doctorate from Brown University. She is a professor at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston. \nShe previously served on the State Housing Appeals Board\, the Pawtucket Juvenile Hearing Board and as a fellow with the Women’s Police Institute. She is a community organizer and founder of Crash Pawtucket\, a local business showcase. She is also a founding member of the Climate Jobs RI coalition.[/mk_toggle][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner disable_element=”yes”][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1656941045572{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nModerator:\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner disable_element=”yes”][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″ offset=”vc_col-md-2 vc_col-sm-offset-0 vc_col-xs-offset-3 vc_col-xs-6″][vc_single_image image=”25362″ img_size=”170×170″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″ offset=”vc_col-md-10 vc_col-sm-offset-0 vc_col-xs-offset-2 vc_col-xs-8″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1751730669861{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Sue AnderBois\nNortheast Climate & Energy Director\nThe Nature Conservancy \nDeputy Majority Whip\nProvidence City Council[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][mk_toggle title=”Sue’s Bio” el_class=”bio-toggle”]Sue AnderBois is the Northeast Director of Climate & Energy at The Nature Conservancy\, as well as the co-vice chair of TNC’s North America Policy and Government Relations cabinet.
