SUMMARY:NECEC/AEG Clean Transportation Summit
DESCRIPTION:The transportation sector accounts for 42% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the Northeast U.S.\, making it the single largest contributor to the region’s carbon footprint. While cleaning up the transportation sector is a priority for states in the Northeast\, it will require a massive amount of new infrastructure deployment and extensive retrofits to existing infrastructure in order to transform it. NECEC and AEG will convene leaders from the public and private sectors across the Northeast to share lessons learned\, pain points and successes to build consensus on how we can wrap our arms around the enormous task of building a clean transportation sector. In particular\, we will look at the recent plans made by all states for public EV charging stations on Interstate highways and what infrastructure (charging and other technologies) is needed for both public and private entities and heavy duty electric truck fleets. \nWe also will delve into the community level perspective to assess how well regional plans address local needs and how to ensure this mass transition is done equitably.

SUMMARY:NECEC's Emerging Trends Series: Decarbonizing Building Heating
DESCRIPTION:One of the toughest barriers to achieving net zero is how to decarbonize the thermal side of energy production (e.g. building heating). Electrification with heat pumps has been proposed as a broadly applicable solution\, and we are starting to see significant heat pump deployment. However electrification may not be a viable solution in every case\, and we may need to consider other pathways like geothermal\, RNG and/or green-hydrogen based solutions. \nAt this event NECEC will convene leaders in the built environment along with technology experts and developers to discuss the pros and cons of each solution. This will cover a range of low carbon options utilizing many technologies such as (but not limited to) Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and District Energy. Participants will also hear from local community representatives about their challenges and which solutions might deliver the best results for EJ communities

SUMMARY:BU IMAP's Corporate Carbon Risk in Utilities
DESCRIPTION:What is the risk associated with carbon targets? \nThis research project will help investors determine the risk associated with corporations achieving their future carbon targets.\nAs corporations and investment firms both commit to targets for reducing their carbon emissions\, there is growing desire to understand the risk associated with these future target statements. Whether or not a firm achieves its emissions targets can not only place its reputation at risk\, but also that of those along it’s supply chain\, including their investors. Current and future policies aimed at pricing climate externalities\, mean that corporate climate performance can have a material impact on financial performance. Yet\, the lack of reliable metrics to capture these risks pose severe challenges. This project aims to develop a novel methodology to predict the likelihood of achieving future corporate carbon targets. It will also publish an open database of the resulting risk measures for those companies that are  analyzed.

SUMMARY:WEST's Work-life Jenga: How to Make the Best Out of Every Moment
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is inspired by an article written by social justice advocate Stacey Abrams. She reflects on what it takes to fit in all the pieces of our lives without feeling like we’ll topple over from the effort of trying to balance everything. Abrams “rejects” the idea of work-life balance. Balance is impossible! Consider how every day something may happen to upset your carefully balanced plan. It might be your child coming down with the flu or an unexpected opportunity to expand your role at work. Abrams believes instead\, on discovering what matters most to you\, and then creating a plan that aligns with your priorities. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you will have the chance to reflect on how you are spending your time\, to notice what you are making time for\, and what is left out. We will provide you time for solo-reflection to consider what you’d like more of in your life–whether it is more time to invest in your personal relationships\, professional development\, health\, or self-care. You will then move into small group discussions\, led by professional facilitators\, where you can share ideas on how to make your lives less stressful and more meaningful. You will leave with a better sense of the steps you can take tomorrow to design a life that aligns with what is most important to you. \nThe goal is for you to leave with a renewed sense of energy and excitement about realistic ways you can design a life that is more fulfilling\, and less stressful. The event will provide you the tools to help you make the decisions that work best for you. The answers are not the same for each of us. We generally don’t make the time to ask ourselves these questions. This workshop will be a great way to start your year! Consider it a gift of time for yourself\, where you can also support other members of the WEST community\, to help them bring more delight into their lives as well.

SUMMARY:SWEP MA & CT's The Economy of Kindness: How Kindness Transforms Your Bottom Line
DESCRIPTION:Join the Society of Women Environmental Professionals\, Massachusetts Chapter (SWEP-MA) for this online event with Linda Cohen. \nWhat is the impact of kindness? In this highly interactive program\, Cohen shares how kindness in the workplace\, improves employee morale\, elevates workplace culture\, and reduces burnout. The size of the kindness action doesn’t matter. There is often an unexpected ripple effect and giving and receiving are often experienced differently. According to research from the University of California Riverside\, 40% of our happiness is determined by intentional actions\, not by genes (50%) or circumstances (10%). Cohen will encourage participation that will help attendees share ways to cultivate a strong culture of kindness. She will also share timely examples. This program will give your participants a variety of new kindness ideas and resources to implement immediately. \nLinda Cohen is The Kindness Catalyst\, a speaker\, consultant and author of a new book\, The Economy of Kindness: How Kindness Transforms Your Bottom Line. For more information check her website lindacohenconsulting.com.

SUMMARY:Out in Energy's Hybrid Event with Hon. Shawn Skelly & Hon. Joe Bryan
DESCRIPTION:To kick off 2023\, Out in Energy is delighted to invite you to a hybrid event featuring The Hon. Shawn Skelly\, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness\, and The Hon. Joe Bryan\, Chief Sustainability Officer at the Department of Defense. During this exciting event\, participants will discuss the intersection of climate action\, clean energy\, resilience\, and the US armed forces. The US military is the largest consumer of energy in the United States; how is the Department of Defense working to create a greener\, more adaptive military that is ready to face the impacts of climate change? SUMMARY:NESEA's BuildingEnergy Access: How Can NESEA Support MWBEs
DESCRIPTION:If you identify as Black\, Indigenous\, a Person of Color\, a Woman\, or as a member of another group underrepresented in the AEC industry and related fields\, then you may be a candidate for BuildingEnergy Access\, a new program NESEA intends to launch to better support your work. The long-term goal is to bring more MWBE professionals into the high performance space and to connect them with the resources of the NESEA community. On February 6\, NESEA will be holding the first in a series of conversations with members of our community who come from historically marginalized groups and would like to get more from NESEA’s resources and programming. \nAs NESEA explore funding opportunities to support this work\, NESEA aims to better understand how their future programming can be as useful and impactful as possible. Given the nature of the program NESEA hopes to offer\, they are particularly interested in hearing from business owners or individuals who serve in a leadership/managerial role within their organizations. \nThe cornerstone of BuildingEnergy Access will be entry into Bottom Lines\, NESEA’s business development program. Bottom Lines is a network of more than 60 companies split into professionally facilitated peer groups\, all working together to improve their triple bottom line – people\, profit\, and planet. Other offerings may include assistance with the MWBE certification process\, professional coaching\, marketing opportunities\, and invitations to have work highlighted through NESEA’s other programs (i.e. hosting a project tour\, presenting at a conference\, writing for our magazine\, etc). \nAdditional location information to come.
