SUMMARY:Pro Tour: Affordable Passive House Midrise in Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Time:\n1pm-5pm\nLocation:\nBrownsville\nBrooklyn\nNew York City\, NY\nCEU Information:\nAIA (pending) \nCost:\n$25 Members/$35 Non-Members\nJoin NESEA for the final Pro Tour of 2024: a passive house-certified\, 185\,000 square-foot building\, providing 160 units of much-needed affordable housing to the neighborhood of Brownsville\, Brooklyn. \nOur event hosts\, Bright Power\, are excited to share this project with the NESEA community\, as they hope it will serve as a replicable example of how to approach housing disparities and promote sustainability in Central Brooklyn. Our event will begin with an opening workshop where the project team will discuss the history\, goals and design and construction and strategies behind this project. Attendees will then break into small groups to hear more from the interdisciplinary team of experts who made the building possible. After the tour\, we’ll regroup for a reception and Q&A. \nMore About the Project \nThis 7-story\, 160-unit Phius+ 2015 residential project includes two buildings joined by a lobby. The lobby level includes shared spaces including coworking space\, a fitness center\, and community rooms\, in addition to the outdoor spaces\, such as vegetated courtyards\, provided for residents. \nThe building provides its low-income population with verified thermal comfort\, superior air quality\, and deep energy savings through a highly efficient envelope and mechanical systems\, supplemented by on-site generation technology via the 100 kW rooftop photovoltaic array. The building was designed to ensure efficient temperature regulation throughout the year to promote passive resiliency while operating at a low heating and cooling demand. \nThe team prioritized a highly insulated envelope to ensure the VRF heating and cooling systems provide maximum comfort as building air leakage has been nearly eliminated\, combined with ERVs to provide large amounts of fresh air to the apartments and common areas\, with minimal heating or cooling energy loss. \nThis project benefitted from NYSERDA support in pursuit of its goals to incorporate such high efficiency standards into an affordable housing project

They represent a wide range of industries\, backgrounds\, and levels of experience. \n2024 Conference Theme: Beyond Compliance\nThe urgency of climate change demands bold action\, innovation\, and transformative leadership. In recent years\, New York and the Northeast have led the country through groundbreaking changes to building codes\, energy codes\, and financial incentives to support climate adaptation across all sectors. Today\, we have an opportunity to push our industry to achieve and even exceed these ambitious mandates. The 2024 BuildingEnergy NYC conference will be a chance to explore both the risks and rewards of moving Beyond Compliance. \nAt this year’s conference\, we challenge you to share your experiences\, successes\, and setbacks with projects and programs that exceed the bare minimum and innovate on existing practices. We need to be thinking beyond compliance both in terms of scope (What else?) and time (What next?). This holistic approach encompasses the intersections of health\, efficiency\, resilience\, and financial benefits\, and prioritizes the needs of people while addressing the climate crisis.

SUMMARY:Pro Tour Of Net Zero Energy Retrofit And Expansion Of A 1782 Vermont Farmhouse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Summer Pro Tour of an under construction\, zero-energy retrofit of a 1782 Vermont Farmhouse\, plus a high performance addition\, in beautiful Reading\, Vermont. Attendees of this tour will learn about the process of retrofitting a historic building\, and the strategies employed for the addition (built off-site)\, to create a net zero energy building with reduced embodied carbon. \nOur event will begin with an opening presentation from the hosting team\, which will give attendees background on the original structure\, the design and build of the addition\, and the overall approach to meeting client sustainability goals. After the opening presentation\, we’ll split into groups to hear from the professionals behind the project\, who will share their specific work. After the tour\, we’ll host a reception and Q&A with the team. \nThis 4181 sq. ft. square-foot building features updated hydronics\, appliances\, an air-water heat pump\, EV charging\, whose energy use is balanced via on-site photovoltaic electrical generation. Heating\, cooling\, and domestic hot water will be supplied by a single air to water heat pump. The choice of hydronics\, combined with the dramatic increase in thermal performance of the original structure\, allows for the reuse of radiators in the original house. The projected annual electrical load is met by the on-site\, grid-tied\, ground-mounted PV system. The building was designed to blend into its rural setting\, connect the living spaces to the surrounding landscape\, and serve the diverse programming needs of the clients: aging in place\, family gatherings\, and hosting groups ranging from 10-40+ people for community-building events and smaller retreat experiences. \nIn order to make the retrofit possible\, significant repairs were performed to make the building structurally sound and also square\, level\, and plumb from the exterior. Materials were carefully selected to reduce the embodied carbon of the new construction\, including 6-inch concrete stem walls\, slag concrete\, and a slabless floor system. Using cellulose insulation allowed the builders to take advantage of its thermal\, hygroscopic\, and carbon-sequestering properties. By being careful during the deconstruction of the house and attached breezeway\, a lot of the existing historic interior was repurposed\, including original interior doors\, large hand-hewn beams\, barn board\, framing\, and flooring. \nIf you are interested in projects that emphasize reusing materials\, ways to reduce concrete\, retrofitting very old structures\, complex multidisciplinary residential projects\, and blending on and off-site construction\, then this is the Pro Tour for you. SUMMARY:NESEA's BuildingEnergy Access: How Can NESEA Support MWBEs
DESCRIPTION:If you identify as Black\, Indigenous\, a Person of Color\, a Woman\, or as a member of another group underrepresented in the AEC industry and related fields\, then you may be a candidate for BuildingEnergy Access\, a new program NESEA intends to launch to better support your work. The long-term goal is to bring more MWBE professionals into the high performance space and to connect them with the resources of the NESEA community. On February 6\, NESEA will be holding the first in a series of conversations with members of our community who come from historically marginalized groups and would like to get more from NESEA’s resources and programming. \nAs NESEA explore funding opportunities to support this work\, NESEA aims to better understand how their future programming can be as useful and impactful as possible. Given the nature of the program NESEA hopes to offer\, they are particularly interested in hearing from business owners or individuals who serve in a leadership/managerial role within their organizations. \nThe cornerstone of BuildingEnergy Access will be entry into Bottom Lines\, NESEA’s business development program. Bottom Lines is a network of more than 60 companies split into professionally facilitated peer groups\, all working together to improve their triple bottom line – people\, profit\, and planet. Other offerings may include assistance with the MWBE certification process\, professional coaching\, marketing opportunities\, and invitations to have work highlighted through NESEA’s other programs (i.e. hosting a project tour\, presenting at a conference\, writing for our magazine\, etc). \nAdditional location information to come.

SUMMARY:NESEA's Bottom Lines Center Live
DESCRIPTION:Members of BuildingEnergy Bottom Lines\, NESEA’s business development program\, will convene virtually for a day of community building and deep-dives into topics affecting their businesses. Breakout discussions will be led by program facilitators.\n\nA common request from Bottom Line members is an opportunity to cross pollinate with members of other groups\, especially around specific areas of interest. This year\, during BuildingEnergy Bottom Line’s all group meeting on January 20\, they will be launching several new network-wide communities of practice based on the model piloted by the Anti-Racist Action Group and the re-invigorated Architects’ Hub. The All Group Meeting will be organized as a series of 1 hour Zoom meetings to kick off these communities of practice.
