NEWIEE: Inspiration. Leadership. Professional Development. Community.
As we kick off NEWIEE’s Membership Month, I wanted to reach out to thank you for being part of the NEWEE community, and to update you on ways for you to remain engaged with us – or to join us for the first time – while we operate under stay-at-home requirements!
Like every organization and company, over the last six weeks NEWIEE has pivoted and is finding new ways to deliver value to our members and our community.

The same principles NEWIEE has always applied underpin our approach going forward: we want to cultivate professional development, provide inspiration, celebrate leadership and build community. But how we do that looks different right now. We’re excited about new initiatives we’re rolling out and I wanted to share information about them with you here.
We kicked off our virtual activities with some fun, to build community as we all adjust to our new way of working and living. Our Earth Day Challenge (#earthday50ne) was based on partnership with nine organizations, and produced a wave of tweets capturing what the environmental and energy community was doing and reflecting on in the run up to the 50th Earth Day. We were delighted to honor Connecticut Power and Energy Society (CPES) for the highest twitter engagement by having Grow Ahead (a women-led reforestation project) plant 50 trees in their name! Last week we had a well attended virtual NEWIEE Trivia Night and Happy Hour for our Rising Professionals, also building community.
One of our new initiatives, that is about to launch, is a monthly “Ask Me Anything” series. On May 13th, we kick off with Tamika Jacques, Ed.D, MassCEC’s Director of Workforce Development and 2017 NEWIEE Rising Star Awardee, We are so excited to provide our community with the chance to learn from leaders in our field – this is one of our ways to provide inspiration. We also appreciate that students and others seeking jobs are looking for professional development opportunities, and this series is one way we are working to provide them.
There’s lots more to come – we are developing plans for the June virtual Roundtable Discussion; a great virtual “Women Shaping the Agenda” event during the summer, which will be an opportunity to celebrate leadership; AND the NEWIEE board is continuing to step up efforts to build diverse, equitable, and inclusive programming, reflecting our Board and our membership’s desire to prioritize that.
Please take a moment to read the testimonials below from some current NEWIEE members, and feel free to reach out to us at NEWIEE@NEWIEE.org with any questions. We are excited to remain in contact with you!
I hope you are all remaining healthy, and that you’ll connect with NEWIEE at one of our upcoming virtual events!

Testimonials
“NEWIEE has been instrumental in my professional development and the trajectory of my career. I started my involvement as a committee volunteer, and I quickly grew to respect and admire the incredible women behind this organization. Through NEWIEE I have connected with dedicated professionals and inspirational leaders who have helped foster my interest in energy. I am now pursuing a master’s degree in Offshore Wind Engineering at Tufts University so I can more directly contribute to the region’s goals for energy and the environment.”
Kelly Smith, PE, CFM

“NEWIEE is a fantastic organization that I’m proud to be a part of. There are so many new initiatives and great ways I’ve been able to be involved from being a mentor, starting the RI Chapter of NEWIEE, and volunteering on various committees. Introducing new people to NEWIEE is a great way to build networks and forge friendships that last even with multiple job changes.”
Shauna Beland
Chief, Program Development at Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources
“After I moved to a new city, I joined NEWIEE to meet like-minded energy and environmental professionals. NEWIEE’s focus on women empowerment inspired me to do more and volunteer for its newsletter team. Beyond keeping me rooted in the NEWIEE network, volunteering has allowed me to organically find a mentor that I connect with, and who genuinely supports and encourages my professional growth.”
