Celebrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: The Strength of the NEWIEE Community

As NEWIEE Membership Committee members, we’re excited to reflect on the incredible strength of this community, especially during Women’s History Month. NEWIEE’s mission—to elevate women’s voices and foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in the energy and environmental sectors—has created a vibrant space for collaboration and growth.

Over the past 15 years, NEWIEE has grown to over 1,200 members, offering countless opportunities for professional development, leadership, and mentorship. It’s a space where all women, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and non-binary individuals are uplifted, and diversity drives innovation and progress.The dedication of members who volunteer, serve on committees, and participate in board leadership strengthens the entire community.

Melissa: When I first joined as an individual member last year, I was immediately struck by how inclusive and welcoming NEWIEE was. The relationships I’ve built here have been invaluable in building inclusive, technology-driven business models to solve climate change.

Kate: From the perspective of an organizational representative, it’s inspiring to see how NEWIEE fosters strong, meaningful relationships that benefit both individuals and organizations alike. My team has gained tremendous insights and built lasting connections through NEWIEE’s events and initiatives.

We also want to recognize the role that everyone plays in supporting NEWIEE’s mission. DEI initiatives benefit everyone by fostering more inclusive workplaces, leading to greater innovation, stronger teams, and broader perspectives. Men and allies within our industry play a crucial role in championing women’s leadership and ensuring diverse voices are heard. Their active support helps to break down barriers and create a more equitable environment for all.

A quote from the book Together captures the essence of our experience: “It is in our relationships that we find the emotional sustenance and power we need to thrive.” In industries as complex and fast-paced as energy and the environment, collaboration and support are essential. NEWIEE’s network empowers members to overcome challenges and drive meaningful change.

As we honor Women’s History Month and NEWIEE Member Appreciation Month, we celebrate the incredible dedication and resilience of this community. Together, we’ll continue breaking barriers, fostering inclusivity, and building a brighter, more sustainable future.
