October is Energy Awareness Month, a time to highlight the critical role of innovative energy solutions in our lives and the future of our planet.
Here in New England, where I’m working to support the offshore wind industry to combat climate change, this critical utility-scale clean energy resource is poised to help revolutionize our regional energy landscape. Offshore wind represents both a pivotal shift towards sustainability, as well as a significant economic opportunity for the region. As we navigate the early stages of this transition, the enthusiasm from residents, business leaders, and policymakers continues to grow, fueled by the visible benefits of job creation and economic development.
While the future for offshore wind and other new renewable energy resources is bright, we do face hurdles as the industry scales up. The offshore wind industry has encountered challenges related to global supply chain tightness, higher interest rates, and a shortage of vessels and components as we work to build a new domestic supply chain. Despite these obstacles, the long-term advantages of offshore wind—including sustainable energy generation and economic gains—promise to leave a lasting impact.
Here at Orsted, we recently celebrated an exciting milestone with the installation of Revolution Wind’s first turbine. This clean energy project alone is set to power over 350,000 homes in southern New England and serves as a testament to the region’s commitment to decarbonizing the power grid. The turbines, assembled at Connecticut’s State Pier and supported by components fabricated at Rhode Island’s ProvPort, highlight the growing local supply chain supported by skilled union workers.
As we celebrate Energy Awareness Month, we recognize that no matter what industry you are in, we are all on the same team focused on setting a course for a sustainable and prosperous future. Every day, I’m thankful for the work my clean energy colleagues are doing to stand up this new American energy industry, and grateful for the chance to play my own part.
