Meet the Team: Why Sarah Is Lacing Up for the Eversource Hartford Marathon

 In NEWIEE Blog

This fall, Team NEWIEE will be hitting the streets of Hartford, CT, for the Eversource Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon, Team 26.2 Relay, & Charity 5K, and we’re looking for more runners (and walkers!) and volunteers to join us.

So far, we are thrilled to have Sarah Adams, Joan Bosma, Michelle Baratta, Lily Sylvester, Carli Deming, Kate Johnson, Alicia Calero, Andrea French, Jacqueline Chakrabarty, Lucy Jordan, Emily Levin, Kenneth Sullivan, and Natalie Bishop already signed up for Team NEWIEE. We still have room on Team NEWIEE, so whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or you’ve never run a 5K, there’s a spot on this team for you!

To help inspire others to join Team NEWIEE, Sarah Adams, NEWIEE Vice President and seasoned runner, shared her racing experience and her reasons for running for NEWIEE. Here’s what she had to say.

What is your experience fundraising/racing?
Starting with high school track/cross country, I’ve been a runner for most of my life and have honestly run more races than I can count – including six marathons! I’ve run the Falmouth Road Race several years for a charity team and love getting to combine something I love to do with philanthropy.

What is your favorite part of fundraising/racing?
My favorite thing about running is that it’s really any (wo)man’s sport. A recreational football player would never find themselves on the same field as Tom Brady, but with running – especially at the marathon distance – you’re toeing the same line as the pros. I’ve been lucky to bump elbows with some of the greats (Des Linden, Frank Shorter!) in the starting corral, and it’s incredibly inspiring to know that you’re running the same race as actual Olympians.

Why are you running for NEWIEE?
It’s been more than six years (and two babies!) since I’ve run competitively. I can’t think of a better reason to get back to the starting line than supporting NEWIEE.

Why is NEWIEE important to you?
In the last 12 years, I’ve built a career that I’m really proud of in energy, but I tell everyone that I genuinely don’t know that I’d still be working in this industry if it weren’t for NEWIEE. The people whom I’ve met through this organization have provided me with invaluable mentorship, support, and letters of recommendation. I’ve known many in my NEWIEE network even longer than I’ve known my husband, and I am always grateful for the community I’ve found here.

Ready to join Team NEWIEE? We still have spots left on our team if you would like to join as a fundraiser. Not interested in running? No problem! We are also looking for volunteers to support the team on race day.
