Wrap Up: Women Shaping the Agenda 2018
On July 26, New England Women in Energy and the Environment (NEWIEE) hosted its fourth annual “Women Shaping the Agenda” series titled “New England’s Climate Readiness: Diverse Voices on Adaptation and Resilience.” The event, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Inn & Conference Center, attracted close to 150 professionals in the energy and environment sectors.
The night opened with welcoming remarks from Mary Ellen Paravalos, President of NEWIEE, and Julie Chen, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at UMass Lowell. Julie highlighted the work UMass Lowell is doing in the energy and environment disciplines, promoting the university as a ready partner to those seeking research and study work.
The program continued with keynote remarks from Katie Theoharides, Assistant Secretary of Climate Change at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. Katie discussed some of Massachusetts’ primary initiatives on climate change and lessons learned that could apply to other states in the region. Katie also touched on strategies for making climate change a less polarizing issue and the importance of partnerships in developing and implementing effective solutions. Katie shared her thoughts on educating future generations about climate change and how to instill environmentally conscious values in children.
The program concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Penni McLean-Conner, Chief Customer Officer and Senior Vice President of Customer Group for Eversource Energy. Panelists included Alison Brizius, Director of Climate and Environmental Planning for the City of Boston, Elizabeth Turnbull Henry, President of Environmental League of Massachusetts, Katherine Kemen, Program Manager for Emergency Preparedness at Partners HeathCare System, and Ellen Miller, Vice President of Projects for AVANGRID Networks.
The panelists discussed best practices and strategies for implementing climate readiness initiatives from the municipal, advocacy, business, and utility perspectives. They also discussed the importance of partnerships and stakeholder engagement in developing solutions and building resilience in communities across the Commonwealth and New England region.
