A Reflection by Nyssa-Dawn Corria

New England Women in Energy and the Environment (NEWIEE) proudly joins the national celebration of African American achievements and contributions.

February marks Black History Month, which is a tradition celebrated for nearly 50 years in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. This month is dedicated to honoring the achievements and contributions of African Americans, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping American history and culture.

Black History Month was established in February 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, educator, publisher and the second Black student to earn a doctorate from Harvard University. The week was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both instrumental in the liberation of black people during the Civil War. In 1976, during the United States Bicentennial, this celebration expanded to encompass the entire month of February.

As an organization dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion within the energy and environmental sectors, NEWIEE recognizes the pivotal role that African American women and men have played in shaping these industries. From pioneers in environmental activism to innovators in sustainable energy solutions, their contributions have been instrumental in driving progress and fostering a more equitable world.

This month, we reflect on the trailblazers who broke barriers despite facing adversity. Figures like Hazel Johnson, known as the “mother of environmental justice,” who advocated for communities disproportionately affected by pollution, and Dr. Warren Washington, a leading atmospheric scientist, who contributed significantly to climate change research. Their stories are testaments to the power of perseverance and vision.

NEWIEE is committed to not only celebrating these achievements but also to building upon them. We believe in empowering the next generation of diverse leaders in our fields. Through mentorship programs, networking events, and educational initiatives, we aim to provide platforms for voices that have been historically underrepresented.

As we observe Black History Month, let’s renew our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Let’s draw inspiration from the past to fuel our efforts in creating a more inclusive future. This month, and every month, we honor the black community’s enduring legacy and look forward to their continued contributions to our sectors and society at large.
