Celebrating Environmental Awareness Month this September

 In NEWIEE Blog

NEWIEE was created to honor professionals in the energy and environmental fields. Environmental protection is a concern for all economic sectors across the globe. With many climate-related devastation occurring across the world in recent months, we salute our colleagues and friends who are protecting our environment while saving lives.

Recognizing the importance of our natural and working lands, we celebrate those who have dedicated their careers in protecting our forests, wetlands, rivers, streams, and oceans, for these places are refuge for birds and wildlife. Through the years as my husband and I raise our two girls, national, state and local parks have become sanctuaries for my family. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made it a daily routine to walk to the local beach, the community garden, or to the neighborhood park to find moments of calm in the world of responsibilities and work.

At the local scale, this summer, my college age daughter, Sophia, had the privilege to work at Long Hill, one of Trustees of Reservation properties. She spent her summer learning about and teaching horticulture and maintaining the grounds so that visitors from near and far can enjoy the beautiful flowers, birds, and small animals at the property.

At the global scale, I applaud all the practitioners who are working tirelessly to advance the rules or lead the charge in siting and permitting the needed infrastructure and energy projects that we will need in the transition to using clean energy, while protecting local people, animals, plants, and the environment. This work is hard, controversial, and needs to be done with great consideration for striking the proper balance between economic progress and delivering a healthy planet for our children.
