EBC: MWRA: Creating and Maintaining a Resilient Water and Wastewater System
Join the EBC Climate Change Committee for a webinar series exploring how Massachusetts state agencies are turning key insights from their past work into action in 2026 and beyond.
Through this series, leadership from MBTA, Massport, MassDCR, MEMA, MassDOER, MA Fish & Game, and MWRA will present their key achievements in advancing climate resiliency over the past year, showcasing impactful projects, partnerships, and measurable outcomes from 2025. Agency leadership will also provide a forward-looking perspective on upcoming initiatives, programs, and policy developments planned for 2026 and beyond, offering insight into how each agency is preparing for evolving climate challenges. Together, these presentations highlight how agencies are implementing the Commonwealth’s ResilientMass Plan through coordinated investments, policies, and on-the-ground resilience actions.
This webinar also includes collaborative support from the EBC Water Resource Committee.
MWRA has worked extensively to create an enduring climate resilient water and wastewater system that will reliably provide clean drinking water and wastewater services well into the future. The Boston metro area is projected to experience substantial sea level rise, stronger coastal storms, more frequent, intense precipitation events, and hotter and longer heat waves over the coming decades, all of which will impact MWRA operations. In response, the Authority has taken proactive steps to prepare for this new normal and fortify critical infrastructure. Michael O’Keefe, Senior Program Manager, Planning will provide an overview of MWRA’s efforts to protect vulnerable coastal facilities from sea level rise, fortify dams for intense precipitation events, and maintain resilience to drought, as well as plans to continue to make the Authority’s infrastructure and operations more resilient to climate change.
The webinar will conclude with a moderated Q&A session for attendee questions.
