Join us on July 18, 2024 for NEWIEE’s 10th annual “Women Shaping the Agenda” event at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. This years topic is Breaking Barriers, Building Resilience, and will feature a select group of leading women representing nonprofit, for profit and government sectors discussing:
- The importance of diverse perspectives in achieving climate goals
- The challenges to advancement women face in the energy & environment fields, the steps they took to overcome them and lessons learned along the way
- How they support others in their professional journeys

Keynote Address:
Emma Cimino
Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Quality
CT DEEP
Emma Cimino serves as the Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Quality (EQ) at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). She was appointed to this position by Governor Ned Lamont in November 2023. As Deputy Commissioner, Emma provides leadership for the three bureaus within DEEP’s EQ Branch – Air Management, Water Protection and Land Reuse (WPLR), and Materials Management and Compliance Assurance (MMCA).
Emma joined DEEP from the office of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, where she led the Senator’s work on energy, environment, transportation, and infrastructure policy, including work on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. Prior to the Senate, Emma worked as a Senior Policy Analyst on the Energy and Environmental Policy team at the National Governor’s Association. She began her state service working for former Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy, serving as a Director of Government Affairs and leading on energy and environmental work. Emma also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2009-2011, during which she taught English in Northern Samar, Philippines.
Emma holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She lives in Hartford with her partner and their dog, Bear.

Abigail Anthony
Commissioner
Rhode Island Public Utilities
Abigail Anthony was appointed by Governor Gina Raimondo to the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission in 2017. Commissioner Anthony is the former Chair of the Commission on Energy Resources and the Environment of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and the President of the Board of the New England Utility Cybersecurity Integration Collaborative. Previously, Commissioner Anthony was the director of Acadia Center’s Grid Modernization and Utility Reform Initiative, and the organization’s Rhode Island director. Commissioner Anthony holds a PhD in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics from the University of Rhode Island. She received her MA and BA in economics from the University of Montana.
Amanda Downey
VP of Strategy Development and Partnerships
National Grid
Amanda Downey is a member of National Grid’s New England Leadership Team and serves as Vice President, Strategy Development and Partnerships. In this role she is responsible leading the strategic direction, operations, and financial oversight required to deliver transitions services under the Share Purchase and Transition Services Agreements (~140 contracts) related to National Grid’s divestiture of its RI business. She is also the principal architect of New England’s first-ever Strategic Workforce Development Initiative and Clean Energy Academies, intended to build a sustainable, systematic pipeline of diverse talent so that our New England workforce, over the long-haul, reflects the communities that we serve.
Amanda, has held a number leadership positions at National Grid with increasing responsibilities, including in Legal, FERC Strategy and Performance, Business Planning and Performance, Gas Capital Delivery – Complex Projects, Strategic Planning, Risk Management, and Corporate and Regulatory Compliance. She serves on several local non-profit boards and is a co-founder and former president of the Greater Boston Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) and is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Amanda earned a Master of Laws in Banking, Corporate and Finance Law from Fordham University School of Law; a Juris Doctor from Thurgood Marshall School of Law; a Master of Business Administration degree from Franklin University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in English Education from Bowling Green State University. Amanda is licensed to practice law in New York and Texas.
Zeyneb Magavi
Executive Director
HEET
Zeyneb is executive director of HEET, where she designed and helped to launch the GasToGeo initiative to drive rapid, efficient, and equitable decarbonization of heating and cooling through deployment of ambient geothermal networks. Today GasToGeo demonstration projects are moving forward across the country and Zeyneb has convened an independent research team to study these first transitions. Zeyneb studied physics, global health, and sustainability and has worked at BBN Technologies, Harvard, MIT, and multiple startups. She is committed to creating and driving forward compassionate, multi-disciplinary and innovative solutions to the urgent challenge of climate change.
Krista Ostuno
President and CEO
Heavy Weight, Inc.
Krista Ostuno is the President/CEO of Heavy Weight, Inc and HW Green Company, both of which are metal recycling facilities located in central CT. She is a second-generation entrepreneur with over 30 years metal recycling experience in the public and private sectors.
In her current role as CEO, she has focused on structured and sustainable growth with a commitment to working towards a net neutral environmental impact.
Recently, HW Green was awarded The Central CT Chamber of Commerce Community Business Award for 2024 and named one of the Hartford Business Journal’s Family Business Award Winners for 2024.
Her commitment to the metal recycling industry and the communities in which she lives and works goes beyond the day-to-day operation of her companies. She currently serves on the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) New England Chapter board as Secretary and was recently appointed as the Vice Chair of ReMA Communications Committee. In addition to her work with ReMA, Krista is also a member of the Sustainable Supply Chain Association, New England Recycling Council, The CT Motor Transport Association, Women In Manufacturing, The Investment Recovery Association and NEWIEE.
She is passionate about educational initiatives for children and collaborates with community schools to drive the understanding of the metal recycling industry and its essential place in the manufacturing ecosystem.
Quality work, integrity, and community involvement are guiding principles in all that she undertakes both personally and professionally. Krista resides in Connecticut with her husband and four children.

Janelle Woods-McNish
Chief Marketing & Diversity Officer
The Trustees of Reservations
Janelle Woods-McNish currently serves as the Chief Marketing & Diversity Officer. In this role, she oversees marketing and communications, public relations, membership, customer relationship management, as well as The Trustees’ diversity, belonging, equity, and inclusion (DBIE) strategy. Janelle’s leadership has resulted in significant growth in volunteer engagement, community engagement, as well as the development of The Trustee’s first DBIE Roadmap.
Previously, Janelle served as the Vice President of Community Impact. Janelle joined The Trustees in 2020 as Managing Director of Community Impact in the Places and Engagement department and was promoted to Vice President in 2022.
Prior to joining The Trustees, Janelle served as Director of Service and Giving at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation for 13 years.
Over the course of her over 17+ year career Janelle has lead teams, operations and strategies across DEI, Employee Engagement, Volunteerism and Community Engagement.
Outside of The Trustees, Janelle serves Boys & Girls Club Board of Trustees, and is an Advisory Council Member and Corporator for Needham Bank. She also serves as the Boston Chapter President for Jack and Jill of America, Inc and a former Board member of City Year Greater Boston Board of Directors.
Janelle is a graduate of Texas A&M University and Boston College where she received her B.B.A in Marketing and International Business and Master of Arts in Higher Education respectively. She also earned an MBA from Simmons College.
She resides in Dorchester, Massachusetts with her husband, Hansley, and twins, Jasmine and Sheridan.
