Women’s History Month: Reflection, Celebration, and Renewed Dedication

In NEWIEE Blog, NEWIEE On the Rise

In March, as we honor Women’s History Month, we’re reminded of the remarkable strides women have made in various fields, including energy and the environment. It’s a time for reflection, celebration, and renewed dedication to advancing gender equity and inclusion in our workplaces.

Fifteen years ago, the New England Women in Energy and the Environment (NEWIEE) was founded with a clear mission: to empower women working in the energy and environmental sectors by building a supportive community and addressing the unique challenges they face. Since then, thousands of women have benefited from NEWIEE’s programming, networking opportunities, and professional development initiatives, forging fulfilling careers and lasting connections along the way.

Yet, despite the progress we’ve made, inequity persists in our sectors and the broader workplace. The energy sector, in particular, has historically been male-dominated, with women and people of color significantly underrepresented in both the workforce and leadership roles. Studies from the International Energy Agency and the NASEO highlight these disparities, revealing that while women represent 47% of the overall workforce, they make up only 25% of the energy workforce. Women of color face even greater barriers to entry and advancement, contributing to a lack of diversity in energy leadership.

The challenges extend beyond representation alone. Women, people of color, and other underrepresented populations in the industry often face unequal opportunities for career development, mentorship, and advancement. They are also more likely to experience bias, microaggressions, and unsafe work environments, which threaten their retention and overall satisfaction in the field.

Recognizing these systemic challenges, NEWIEE has taken an intentional approach to addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through programs such as NEWIEE on Campus, Rising Professionals, Mentorship, Peer Circles, and regional chapters, the organization provides a platform for diverse candidates to explore career opportunities, enhance their skills, and build professional networks. Additionally, initiatives like the NEWIEE Job Board connect employers with talented individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive hiring process.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, and prepare for our upcoming annual Awards Gala, it’s essential to acknowledge the progress we’ve made together. NEWIEE’s impact in the market is fueled by a highly engaged membership base, a dedicated board of directors and volunteers, an illustrious advisory board and the generous support of donors and sponsors. Through events like our annual Gala and ongoing content features, we highlight the achievements of women in energy and environmental fields, inspiring others to pursue their passions and break barriers.

However, our work is far from over. While we celebrate our successes, we must also recognize that there is still much to be done. This Women’s History Month, let’s recommit ourselves to advancing gender equity and inclusion in our workplaces. Let’s continue to support one another, advocate for change, and create a future where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive. Together, we can build a more inclusive and sustainable world for all.

Now, let’s get back to work.
