The 2023 Annual NEWIEE Awards Gala is now SOLD OUT.
Join us for NEWIEE’s 12th Annual Awards Gala celebrating the accomplishments of women in the energy and environment fields! The Gala draws attendees from across New England for an inspirational evening celebrating four awardees, distinguished women from New England who have driven change. The evening includes networking opportunities both before and after a seated dinner and the Gala program. This is an evening not to be missed!
2023 Gala Honorees
Keynote Address:
Maria Robinson

“In the continued push for energy jobs in New England, NEWIEE has carved out a space for women in an industry that can still feel isolating at times. Being able to connect with other women at different stages and pathways in their careers is such a phenomenal opportunity.”
Maria Duaime Robinson was the first Korean-American elected to the Massachusetts General Court, where she served in the House of Representatives from 2019-2022. While in office, she led the bicameral Clean Energy Caucus, was the Massachusetts state lead for the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators where she also served on the board, and was the only state legislator on the U.S. EPA Clean Air Act Advisory Committee. She also served on faculty at Tufts University’s School of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy, bringing her expertise in energy policy to graduate students. Prior to her election in 2018, Maria led Advanced Energy Economy’s Wholesale Markets Program, including engagement at FERC and the regional transmission organizations.
Previously, she focused on regulatory issues relating to energy and air, including a 27-state campaign with Governors’ offices, legislatures, and energy and environmental regulators. She also managed AEE’s report development and data-driven analysis at both the state and national level. She worked for Navigant Consulting in the renewable energy practice, supporting the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in analyzing and procuring contractors for statewide renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
Maria is a proud lifetime Girl Scout. She holds an S.B. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Masters of Jurisprudence in Energy Law from the University of Tulsa.

I am honored and extremely grateful to receive this award. As an award recipient, I am reminded that as leaders, we have a responsibility to inspire, empower and support the next generation of professionals in this field and motivates me to contribute to this important effort.”
Tracy Babbidge currently serves as the Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Environmental Quality Branch at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. As the Deputy, Tracy currently oversees nearly 350 employees including managers, engineers, attorneys, analysts and scientists working across three Bureaus (Air, Materials Management and Compliance Assurance, and Water Protection and Land Reuse). Collectively, these three Bureaus are charged with protecting and enhancing Connecticut’s air, water and land. Tracy manages a diverse set of environmental quality programs which include environmental monitoring, permitting, enforcement, and the clean-up of contaminated sites.
Tracy has also served in several environmental positions within the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) including serving as the Bureau Chief for both the Air Management Bureau, and the Bureau of Energy and Technology Policy.
Prior to state service Tracy worked on the federal level for the Environmental Crimes Section of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. She received her law degree from Quinnipiac College School of Law and her B.A. from Providence College. She is a member of the Connecticut Bar.

Powerful women supporting other women through industry organizations like NEWIEE set a wonderful example for bringing new young women into the industry and helping them to grow.”
Jennifer Cullen, Director of Labor Relations & Workforce Development, works to implement offshore wind workforce development programs to ensure a locally trained and qualified workforce and domestic supply chain for offshore wind projects, a role she also fulfills for the Vineyard Wind 1 project. She spearheaded negotiations on the nation’s first offshore wind Project Labor Agreement and is now working to implement the Project’s commitments to utilize local labor. Previously, she spent over 10 years in the nonprofit sector, advocating for policies to promote clean energy and clean water in communities throughout the US.
Jen is originally from Cape Cod and has extensive experience working to build support for offshore wind in the community. She holds a dual Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and French from the University of Vermont and a Master’s degree in Communications from Boston University. She is now happily settled back in her hometown of Barnstable with her husband, two little girls, and dog and enjoys all four seasons on the beaches of the Cape.

Shalaya Morissette (she/her) is Chief of the Minority Business and Workforce Division at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), located within the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity. She is a highly sought-after collaborator and co-conspirator in the clean technology space. Most recently she hails from the utility sector in safety and compliance. In 2022 she took on an additional role at Dearborn STEM Academy in Boston, Massachusetts as a teacher to 11th and 12th graders – delivering a curriculum for engineering with energy in mind. Previously she held various roles in higher education, including enrollment services project manager and in global transportation as the Director of Affiliate Relations. She is the former president of the Greater Boston chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy. Serving as the first African American board member of the New England Women in Energy and Environment, she has been devoted to elevating and engaging women and people of color in the energy space. As a Georgia Gwinnett College Alumni Association board member and a committee member for Browning the Green Space, she has been engaged in the nonprofit and higher education space as a strong advocate for elevating minorities in the energy transition. Morissette’s passion for bringing young people into the clean energy industry has also been supported with her work with Girls Inc and WriteBoston. Shalaya received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Georgia Gwinnett College and her Master of Education degree from Cambridge College.

Cristina Mendoza is an experienced strategy and sustainability consultant, passionate about contributing to the making of a more sustainable world for all. Her extensive sustainability, environmental science, and business expertise fuel the strategic solutions she develops for clients and industry organizations, and her passion for the field is shared with team members through formal mentorship.
Beyond her professional commitments, since 2019 Ms. Mendoza has actively served as a Board Member and Strategic Planning Committee Co-Chair of the non-profit, ‘e’inc. A Charlestown-based non-profit, “e” inc. that provides children, teens, and adults a scientific understanding of Earth’s biomes, resources, and systems and the skills to protect the planet and live sustainably.
She is also in her fourth year serving as Chair of the Environmental Business Council (EBC) of New England Ascending Professionals Committee, previously served as an expert advisor of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM) Sustainability Round Table, and was a Founding Member of the MassMEDIC Corporate Social Responsibility Workgroup.
Ms. Mendoza received the Environmental Business Council’s Ascending Leader Award in 2017 for her exceptional leadership and industry involvement in the early stages of her career and was the key developer of a Program Optimization Strategy service which won the 2020 Environmental Business Journal award for New Practice Areas.
Ms. Mendoza holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science, and a Master of
Business Administration (MBA), both from Clark University.
About the NEWIEE Awards
The NEWIEE Awards are presented at the annual NEWIEE Gala to honor and celebrate the achievements of women leaders in the energy and environment industry.
- The Leadership Award honors women who have promoted opportunities for women in the energy and environmental fields, and have continued to nurture and encourage women in these areas throughout their careers.
- The Achievement Award honors women who have achieved professional excellence within their area of specialty and have actively paved the way to success for other women in similar or related professional areas. These women demonstrate excellence in a variety of professional settings, including leadership on the national, regional, or local level.
- The Rising Star Award, in honor of Allison Smith was created in 2016 to honor a woman with less than ten years of industry experience who has demonstrated a commitment to, and positive impact on, her field; both professionally and in her personal endeavors.
